Today, Bug and I had an easy time to decide where to eat for lunch. We had reached an unanimous decision to try the new ramen restaurant in Empire Subang! This branch boasts to be the original ramen from Japan, as this franchise is apparently very popular from the Land of Rising Sun. They had also employed a Japanese cook, probably to ensure the ramen were of an authentic flavour.
So here we go, we came during the lunch hour on Friday, approx 1.45pm. The place was packed with the working class people. I reckon some of them were even Japanese businessmen! A good sign for the restaurant. We immediately grabbed a seat, and was presented with a menu.
Everything looks real yummy there! Their specialties were their ramen (Like duh!), and there were 20 different kinds of ramen inside. Actually upon looking at their choices, it is all the same, except the ratio of the meat:egg:veggies are different. The ramen and their broth will taste the same so it depends on which you prefer there.
Bug ordered the char siu tamago ramen (RM 26) which comes with 4 slices of pork, and one egg; while I had the kakuni tamago ramen (RM 27) which had 1 slice of pork, 1 pork belly (if I remembered correctly), and 1 egg.
Every table comes with this
Their noodles took approx 10 mins to come. When it came, I was taken aback by the colour of the broth. It was a bright unnatural yellow, as you could see from the pictures below.
Char siu tamago ramen (RM 26) at the back
When you first savour the noodles, the first thing that one must do is to savour the broth. I did not know what to expect judging from the colour. What I tasted did not match what I saw! The broth was sweet and light, with a tinge of pork essence. It was not too salty for me, and it goes perfectly well with my noodles. What a sweet surprise! Bug was happily drinking the soup so fast until he got a stomach burn from the hot soup. LOL!
The pork slices (Round and light brown) were infused with some chinese herbs, which gave the meat an earthy taste. It was soft enough to chew, but bordering on the too soft side as it breaks when i try to pick up using the chop sticks. It is very flavourful and delicious. The pork belly (Or something else which I could not remember) tastes like the pork you could get in any bak kut teh shop. If I had to make a choice, I would prefer the pork slices instead.
The signature ramen
The noodles were light and springy. No, it does not taste like maggi mee nor instant noodles. The ramen was hand made, with a spring to every bite. It did not go soggy towards the end as it keeps the springy texture. The ramen did not break easily either, which means it was not too soft.
The herbal egg
Ahhh, the herbal egg. As a side dish, it costs RM2 for one egg. But this is no ordinary egg. The egg is done perfectly, where the egg whites are harden but the yolk is still runny. Yummy! And yes, it is boiled with herbs. Must be for days, as the egg white is already brown and has a herbal taste to it as well. Yummy yummy! I love the yolk!
The total damage: Rm62.70
The total damage came up to be RM62.70 for the both of us. Sure ain't cheap for just a bowl of noodles!
Verdict: This restaurant is a healthier change from what we always use to frequent. One bowl of noodles is a work of art, and is basically comfort food in a bowl. Nice to eat when it is cold and rainy (Which it was on that day!). Would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are craving for some good piping hot soup noodles, but would like a change from the normal hawker stalls. But be prepared to splurge, as all the noodles I saw are at least RM20 and above per bowl.
