Last Saturday, a few friends and I went to Broga hills for a hiking session. We departed from our place at around 6am. It was all dark, and we were all excited about our hike!
First unfortunate event: We got lost
Yes, armed with a Papago GPS, and a Samsung Galaxy W, we still got lost. We missed the turning after getting into LDP. We ended up on some strange highway that brought us half an hour away from the hiking are (I still don't know what highway that was)! We ended up at Broga at 8am in the morn, a whole 1 hour late from our initial plan.
Lesson learned: Use Google Maps on iPhone/iPad. Samsung Galaxy W maps was not good!
So in the end, we started hiking up at approximate 8am. It was pretty bright already. So here is our hiking party:
Here we go walking up a mountain road
The place is starting to get very commercialised! The last time that I had hiked up Broga Hills was way back in 2009, and I definitely do not remember these stalls.
Yes, they were actually selling drinks at the foot of the mountain (NOT at the parking space)
It was a good day to hike, as it was not raining. Saying that, it was actually very HOT!! Being a 'puteri lilin', I started to sweat and thus looks ugly in the following photos.
Oh the other hand, hiking at 8am on a Saturday is quite a pain as there were so many people! There were literally a traffic jam at every route that we took. When we hike up, we had to make sure that we don't bump into people in front, and also avoid the people running down from the top.
My advice: Try hiking on a normal weekday early in the morning to avoid the crowd!!!
And I was also very out of shape. Uh oh! I made ALOT of pit stops on the rocks.
That is me and Bug at one of my pitstops
For those who had never climbed Broga Hills before, it is a easy climb, but you definitely need to have a certain level of fitness to climb up, as some parts were very steep and slippery. I'd lost track of how many people who slipped in front of me.
The weather was cooperative though, and so we managed to take a few nice pictures.
Bug in the fields!
Second unfortunate event: Mandy got sick
Our second unfortunate event happened during the steep climb up the first hill. We broke up into two parties as I was out of shape and needed extra time to recuperate, and thus, Mandy and the boys went ahead first. Because she pushed her body to climb up the steep hill, her body broke down and she could not reach the top. Not only that she did not have a breakfast.
Lesson learned: Get a good sleep before the climb, eat a hearty breakfast, and do not over exert yourself.
The crazy crowd, and the steep climb prior to the first hill
Third unfortunate event: Accident at Broga Hill!!!!
Our third unfortunate event happened when we were sitting beside Mandy at the hill, refer picture above. Bug was sitting furthest out, from the edge of the hill. And guess what happened????
A ROCK ROLLED DOWN AND HIT BUG ON THE BACK!!!
Ok, now that was seriously dangerous. The rock was roughly the size of a 320ml bottle (2/3 of a normal 500ml water bottle). Imagine a solid rock rolling down from the top of the hill, at such a high velocity, and then it slams you at your back, how would you feel?
The extend of the injury
The injury was the length of a tooth pick. Could you imagine how fast was the rock now?
How did the rock rolled down? Apparently, a lady slipped on the rock while coming down. It was all an accident. Good thing too. If it was one of the youths who kicked a rock for fun, he/she is gonna get a 'good' session from me. The bf/husband came down and offered to pay for his medical bills. We declined as it was an accident, but I accepted his antiseptic wipes though. It was useful to clean the sand off the wound. I had an ice pack from a Milo drink that we had packed for breakfast. It was useful to keep the wound from swelling as well.
Lesson learned: Be EXTREMELY careful when you choose where to sit, and bring ice pack! You would never know when it would come in handy.
Because we were two members down, we didn't managed to climb all the way up to the third hill. We climbed to the second hill, and left the third hill for another day, as it was hot; plus Mandy was not feeling well, and Bug was injured.
Managed to take some nice photos of the scenery while we were there.
And so am I
By the time we came down from Broga Hill, we were famished eventhough it was only 11am! I quickly googled out a place to eat for lunch.
Many bloggers had wrote about the Broga Recreational Fishing Park. We decided to try to find this place.
My first verdict: IT WAS SUPER HARD TO FIND!!
We made a wrong turning again. Humph!
Directions:
1. From the Broga Hill carpark, turn to your left. The Rabbit Farm would be on your right. Go all the way straight. When you see the monument, drive straight in. DO NOT turn to your right, because it will lead you to seremban. We learned this the hard way.
Go straight when you see this monument!!
2. After you drive straight in, you would see some shops on your left and right. Continue driving straight until you reach a temple. (No pictures, don't think you can't recognize a temple right?)
3. There would be a small road on your left beside the temple. Follow that small road. Be careful for the cars oncoming, as the roads are rather small and bumpy.
4. Follow the road, there would be plenty of lalang (weeds) around you. You are on the right track. Keep on going straight, until you see a pond on your left, and a T-junction in front of you. Go slow, as there would be a small road to your left just before the T-junction. Turn into the small road.
5. Follow the small road, and you would see a restaurant by the pond. This is where Broga Recreational Fishing Park is located.
We have reached our destination
Yeah, you were hard to find man!
Pretty secluded eh? I sure hope the food is worth it. The fish was cooked using charcoal. Looks pretty promising.
How they cook their fish
The view from the restaurant is beautiful! The restaurant overlooks a pond (Where all the fishes stay), and is pretty breezy. I felt very calm and serene looking at the greenery, complimented by the blue blue sky. Hard to find untouched nature like this.
Nice view
The simple menu was given by a grumpy old lady, she didn't seem very keen on serving us. Her frown grew bigger when none of us can speak proper chinese. Hmmm..
Nevertheless, we ordered four different types of fish. We were hungry!
The different cooking styles of fish
My hungry hiking buddies waiting for the food. Took pictures of them.
Kein Yip, Mandy and Timothy
The fish came beautifully wrapped in an aluminium foil. We eagerly unwrapped the foil to reveal the treasure inside.
Tilapia fish grilled (or steamed?) a la clear steamed style - RM12
The portions weren't very big, it was only a 400g fish. Nevertheless, the fish was relatively fresh, I had tasted fresher ones before. But it is good enough. The flesh was bouncy and springy, and the soy sauce accompanied the clear taste of the fish. Very appetizing.
These fish would swim to you!
The bill came up to be approx RM65 for all of us. Not too bad, as we had 4 different styles of fish, 5 cans of 100 Plus (They didnt serve other kinds of drink, only canned ones), and 9 plates of rice (Yes, the boys were hungry!).
Verdict: We ordered four different styles of fish, clear steamed, assam fish, nyonya fish and herbal sauce. All the fishes were relatively fresh, and bouncy and springy. But they could do with more meat though. All the fishes were approx 400g. The nyonya and assam fish tasted similar. The only difference is that the assam was slightly more spicier than the nyonya. The sauce complimented the fish nicely as it was not too sour as well. The herbal and the clear steamed was similar too, except the herbal has red dates (good for the eyes) and has a herbally taste (70 soya, 30 herbal) to it.
It is a nice place to have lunch in, cheap, with good food as well. But I would not make a trip from KL just to have their fish. If you are planning to do some hiking in Broga, then by all means do drop by and have a scrumptious lunch here. Bug definitely enjoyed this place as he ate 4 plates of rice by himself!
