After our morning escapes at Langkawi Bird Paradise, we went back to Pantai Cenang for a quick lunch as we were due for island hopping at 2pm, and it was already 1.15pm. Oh no, Malaysian timing! So rush rush rush! What is better than mamak food for a cheap and quick fix?
After reading a many good reviews on Tripadvisor, we made our way down to Nasi Kandar Tomato which is a 2 mins drive from our resort, or 15 mins walk. It is very easy to get here. Just drive along Cenang beach, it would be on your right (from the airport), and on your left (from Sunset Beach Resort). You couldn't miss it.
A typical looking sign board with a canteen-like seating arrangements greeted us as we parked our car in the parking bays provided.

It was a sweltering hot day, and there was no air cond at the eatery! What more could you expect from a typical mamak stall? So, we found another way to cool ourselves with a Neslo ais (Nescafe + Milo) which costs us RM 2.50 only!
Bug and his favourite Neslo
Neslo ais was sweet and has a wonderful aroma of coffee and chocolate mixed together. Topped with some crunchy ice, this is THE way to keep oneself cool during the hot, summery days of Malaysia.
Both of us took the Nasi Briyani which was at the back and it is self service. What is means is basically, all the dishes are lined up in a row. All you need to do is to scoop up the amount of rice that you want, take the dishes with the spoon, and voila! Enjoy your meal! I took the nasi briyani + mutton + some veggies + some fish curry as my 'kuah' (sauce).
oops, I was halfway eating before I remembered that I havent taken a single picture of the food yet!
I don't know why the picture is rotated the wrong way, when it was the right way up in the computer. Anyways, you get the point. The food is delicious!! The mutton was tender and it is very flavourful. Topped up with the fish curry, it was mind blowing. The curries were not too spicy to cater to the tourists who often frequent the mamak. It was perfect for me as I could not take too spicy food. Yum! Oh btw, my plate costs RM 7. =)
This was definitely one of the cheapest places to eat in Langkawi to get your stomach filled. We enjoyed here so much, until we came back again on the same night for our supper fix as I was craving for their roti canai!
We were so greedy, until we ordered 3 different kinds of roti. Roti canai for me, tosai + Neslo for Bug, and a roti tisu to share.
Bug's tosai (RM 3)
To be honest, I could not remember how much his tosai costs. But I could promise you that it is less than RM4. Not too bad huh? His tosai is nice, but not really my cup of tea. What I like best is my roti canai! But give it a try there coz it does taste nice!
Bug happy with his Neslo
Roti canai (Rm0.70)
As for me, I am happy with my roti canai. It only sets me back Rm 0.70. Could you believe the price? Back in KL, a slice of roti canai costs RM1.20, and it is not nice. This roti canai is cheap and good. It was nicely browned, fresh as it is still hot (and I saw the guy made it too!), and not too doughy. The only regret is that I didn't order more. Oh bother.
Roti tisu (Rm3.50)
Once again, I really couldnt remember the price for this, but I'm guessing it is Rm3.50. What I'm sure of once again, is that it is less than Rm4. Awesome pricing isnt it? Roti tisu is basically a paper thin crispy dough, which is basically sweet due to the sprinkle of sugar on the insides of the cone. This one is slightly different. Instead of using sugar, they had a thin layer of condensed milk. This gives a constrast with the crispy skin, which gives it a different sensation all together. Yum-meh!
Oh, this is me being greedy! It's all mine! Muahaha!
Verdict: This is THE place to go if you wish to have a cheap and filling lunch. And this is THE place if you wish to try authentic Malaysian food, as this is THE place where Malaysians hang out for drinking sessions with their buddies. Good food, great prices! What more could I ask for?
Be warned: This place is sweltering hot, so don't come in long pants and long sleeve shirts, unless you want to melt your skin off.
